On Thursday we challenged our readers to get BORN FREES to register for the upcoming local government elections. Being registration weekend I was hopeful we would have a positive response….I was not prepared for what happened next….

I got an email from KALLAY NAIR, senior reporter from eNews.

Hi there

I am trying to pull together a story on the born frees being able to vote this year. We doing a preview on tomorrow’s voter registration.

We thought it would be great story on the born frees, to inspire people to get out there and register.

Can you guys put us in touch with a few who we can talk to today, please?

regards

Kalay

So I responded immediately nominating the perfect person for the job, my niece TONI. They setup the interview and next thing we knew Saturday night 8pm LIVE from the eNews studios she answered questions posted to her with ease. Our whole family and a room full of friends gathered around the tv watching the interview. We cheered her on as she handled the questions and moment like a champ! Well done Toni!

Toni did get to register today. Three other fiends of ours also managed to update their registrations as they have moved since last voting. The reports we have had up to know is that the process was easy peasy, and most voting stations were very quite. Up to know only 400 000 new registrations have been received.

The IEC had hoped for over 1.2 million. I believe they are considering a fresh new campaign and approach to entice the youth to register and ultimately exercise their vote.

I feel the political parties and powers in this country better start appealing to the youth or else they will loose interest in the process.

To all of you who participated, thank you. We will see you in the voting station!!

I challenge you to get one, or more, unregistered VOTER! registered this weekend for the upcoming Local Government Elections. Voter registration happens this weekend, 5-6 Feb.

In the 20 to 29 age group there are an estimated 9.5 million eligible voters yet 5.1 million or only 53.7% are registered to vote. If we unpack the figures further: Only 50.6% of the males or 5 in 10 in this category are registered to vote while 56.7% or nearly 6 in 10 of the women in this group are registered to vote. This stands in stark contrast to the approximate 93% of people who are 30 years and older who have registered as voters.

So lets try get some youth registered this weekend. Even if we have to drag them kicking and screaming, it is for there good you know.

Currently the breakdown for registered voters is as follows:

Province

Why is Nelson Mandela in a private hospital then? The Millpark is owned by the NETCARE group. Surely 1 Millatary Hospital in Pretoria should be taking care of Madiba?

Or is this an obvious slap in the face for local government health care standards?

I approached this in my own way….I figure send the party structures an email requesting my councilors contact details. The ones that reply will get offered an opportunity to post election snippets on my blog.

Lets see if anyone gives a shit…..

I have received a response from the DA and am awaiting the local councilors answer. Nothing from the other parties.

Why? And why are Tata’s grand kids visiting him in hospital if he is there for “routine” tests?

Police arrived shortly after 20:00, confiscated cameras, and removed all media staff.

The journalists were not on the hospital premises.

Unconfirmed reports said that Mandela may be moved from the hospital.

The twitter feed from @manyweiner suggests there is serious interest from the media…..

@MandyWiener: I’ll be back at Milpark at 05:30. But @ewnreporter will be at the hospital throughout the night #Madiba

President Zuma is reportedly “not returning from Davos” at this stage.

The life expectancy of a South African male is 48.8 years. (as per wikipedia http://tinyurl.com/yvls29 )

Mr Mandela spent 28 years in jail.

92-28=64

He has outlived his life expectancy by 15 years……excluding the time that was stolen from him……

I think it’s time we prepared this country for the inevitable. The man is old, surely must have some medical conditions, and can not live for ever.
